Thinking about joining us underground? Here’s what to expect — from terrain and pace to the support you’ll have along the way and the rewards waiting at the end.
Physical, but not extreme
Our tour isn’t a “walking-only” experience, and it’s not an adrenaline activity either.
There’s:
-
No jumping into water.
-
No abseiling or ziplining.
-
No boats or rafts.
-
No need for extra technical gear.
Instead, it’s an adventure-style cave tour. You’ll:
-
Walk on uneven ground.
-
Move through shallow water.
-
Climb up and over large rocks.
-
Navigate some snug natural passages.
After exiting the cave, there’s a beautiful forest walk back to base that includes some hills and just over 200 steps.
If you’re reasonably active and comfortable walking and moving your body, you’ll be absolutely fine. It’s less about peak fitness and more about confidence, balance, and being willing to take your time.
Caves just as nature intended
Our caves are unmodified. There are no concrete paths, railings, or artificial lighting systems like you’ll find in some other parts of the Waitomo cave network.
That’s very intentional.
It means you experience the caves as they truly are — raw, quiet, and full of atmosphere. The glowworms shine brighter, the limestone formations feel more magical, and the sense of adventure is very real.
It’s the kind of cave exploring our family grew up with, stepping carefully over rocks, moving through narrow passages, and noticing every sound and texture around us.
Small groups. Supportive pace.
We keep our groups small and move at a steady, supportive pace so no one feels rushed.
The age limits (12+ for open group tours and 10+ for private tours ) is more about having the confidence and the ability to follow instructions than it is about the tour being “easy.”
We want everyone to feel safe, capable, and present in the experience.
Our guides are with you every step of the way
A big part of what makes the experience special is our guides.
They know every rock, every turn, and most importantly, how to support people who might feel unsure at first. Whether it’s checking in quietly along the way, offering a hand over trickier sections, adjusting the pace, or giving calm encouragement — they are constantly reading the group and making sure everyone feels comfortable.
Abi had this to say on TripAdvisor about her recent visit:
“As someone with claustrophobia, I was doubting my life decisions. As well as making the entire visit enjoyable for the whole family, our guide (Ash took particular care of me and I amazed myself by shimmying through small spaces and clambering through snug spots! Thank you so much for helping me push beyond my comfort zone. Adventure 1 - Claustrophobia 0.”
Moments like this are what the experience is all about.
You’ll never be forced to do anything you’re uncomfortable with. We talk things through, take it step by step, and make sure everyone feels safe and capable.
If you have any injuries, mobility concerns, worries about tight spaces (like Abi), or just aren’t sure if it’s right for you, we’re always happy to chat beforehand and help you decide.
The reward
What you get in return is something truly unique:
-
A genuine connection with our family’s caves.
-
Glowworms up close in a quiet, natural setting.
-
A real sense of accomplishment.
-
A shared experience that feels authentic, not staged.
Down to Earth is not a theme-park version of caving. It’s nature — raw and untouched — experienced at your pace, with the right support beside you.
We look forward to welcoming you underground.
Until next time,
The team at Down to Earth – Waitomo Eco Cave Tour
