Ready to see the glow for yourself? We’d love to show you around our backyard.
Step into our family’s private Waitomo glowworm caves — fewer crowds, more magic, and memories that stay with you.
Picture this: you step into the cave with only a handful of people nearby. The air is cool and still. Then you look up… and the ceiling is sprinkled with glowworms like a sky full of stars. No rushing. No big groups shuffling past. Just that quiet “wow” moment you can actually feel.
That’s exactly why we keep our tours small here at Down to Earth Eco Cave Tours. We cap our groups at 8 people — not because it’s easier, but because it’s the experience we’d want if we were the ones visiting.
Less people, more magic
Small groups change everything. You can take your time, pause for photos without someone’s head in the shot, and actually hear your guide without straining. You also notice more — the little details that get missed when things feel busy. Glowworms glittering overhead, water trickling through the cave, or a fantail popping up on the bush track like it’s decided to join the tour.
Looking after the caves we love
Keeping numbers low isn’t just about comfort — it’s also about care. Our family has been looking after this land and our private cave system for four generations, and we want it to stay healthy for the generations to come. Fewer people underground at once means a lighter footprint: less disturbance, less noise, and a gentler impact on the cave environment. It helps the glowworms, the streams, and everything that belongs here keep thriving.
It feels more personal
One of our favourite parts of running small tours is how quickly it starts to feel relaxed — like you’re not just being “processed through,” but actually welcomed in. Our guides love getting to know who’s on the tour, and sharing the little family stories that make this place home (the kind you don’t find on a signboard). And those are often the moments people remember most — a laugh, a shared “did you see that?!” or the hush that falls when the glowworms really show off.

In Waitomo, there are all sorts of ways to explore — big commercial caves, black water rafting, and plenty in between. But if you’re after something quieter, more personal, and genuinely connected to the land, a small tour makes all the difference.
Until next time,
