What Waitomo Cave Tour Is Right for Me?

A friendly guide to the different cave experiences in Waitomo, including easy walking tours, mobility-friendly options, photography tours, and Down to Earth’s small-group adventure caving experience.

Trying to choose a Waitomo cave tour? First of all, welcome to the confusion club.

You are definitely not alone.

A lot of people arrive in Waitomo thinking there is one cave, one company, and one glowworm tour. Even plenty of New Zealanders think this. But surprise — Waitomo has hundreds of caves and several different companies offering very different kinds of experiences.

So when people ask, “What’s the best Waitomo cave tour?” the honest answer is: it depends what kind of cave person you are.

Yes, apparently that is a thing around here!

Some people want an easy walking tour. Some people want a classic glowworm boat ride. Some people need wheelchair or mobility-friendly access. Some people want black water rafting with one of the larger adventure companies. And some people want to step away from the crowds, climb into a natural cave, see glowworms in their quiet underground home, and come out feeling like they have actually had an adventure.

That last one is where we come in.

At Down to Earth, we are not the polished, footpath-and-handrail kind of cave tour. We are a small, family-run adventure caving experience on private land, and our cave is very much a real cave.

There are no concrete paths, no handrails, no mood lighting, and no big crowds shuffling along behind you. Instead, you’ll walk through a cave stream, move over natural limestone, explore by helmet light, and see glowworms in their natural environment.

We personally think that is part of the fun.

But we also know our tour is not right for everyone — and that is completely okay.

If you are travelling with someone who needs wheelchair access, pushchair access, or a smoother walking surface, Ruakuri Cave is probably the best place to start. It is known as one of the more mobility-friendly cave experiences in Waitomo and is a great option for people who want to enjoy a cave without needing to manage uneven natural ground.

If you are looking for the classic Waitomo glowworm boat tour, then one of the larger tourism operators may be the right fit. These tours are well set up for visitors who want a more structured experience, larger facilities, and formed paths. If you are after something more adrenaline-based, black water rafting is another popular Waitomo option.

But if you like the sound of a private cave, a family-run tour, small groups, and a more natural Waitomo experience, then Down to Earth might be your kind of place.

Our Off the Beaten Track Tour is for people who want a smaller, more personal glowworm experience in a natural cave environment. You do not need to be an athlete, a professional caver, or someone who owns outdoor gear in five different shades of khaki. But you do need to be comfortable with uneven ground, a bit of climbing around, and be prepared to walk through water and get your feet wet.

Think adventure, not extreme.

We provide all the gear, including clothing, boots, socks, helmets, and lights, so you do not need to arrive looking like you are about to summit Everest. Our guide also takes photos during the tour and emails them to you afterwards, because we know it is much nicer to enjoy the moment than spend the whole time worrying about dropping your phone into a cave stream.

If you would prefer the cave just for your own group, our Private Off the Beaten Track Tour is a lovely option. It gives you more space, more flexibility, and a more personal experience. It is great for families, couples, nervous adventurers, or anyone who just likes the idea of having the cave experience to themselves.

And if photography is the main reason you are coming to Waitomo, our Photography Tour is the one to look at. Phones are welcome on our standard tours, but proper glowworm photography takes time, darkness, patience, and space. A dedicated photography tour gives you a much better chance to slow down and capture the magic properly.

The main thing to remember is this: there is no single “best” Waitomo cave tour for everyone.

The right tour is the one that suits you.

If you need mobility-friendly access, Ruakuri Cave may be your best choice.

If you want the classic glowworm boat tour, one of the larger tourism operators might suit you well.

If you want black water rafting, there are larger adventure companies in Waitomo that specialise in that style of underground experience.

And if you want a small-group, family-run, natural glowworm adventure away from the crowds, then we would love to welcome you to Down to Earth.

Waitomo is full of amazing caves, but they are definitely not all the same. So take a little time to choose the experience that feels right for you.

And if you are still not sure, just get in touch. We are always happy to help you work out whether our tour is the right fit — even if that means pointing you somewhere else.

Because at the end of the day, we want you to have the best Waitomo experience for you.

And if that happens to involve a bit of adventure, a helmet light, and some very happy glowworms, even better.

Until next time,
